Two nuggets from the early 80s on vinyl for the first time! In the fall we were saddened to hear about the passing of founding member and original bass man Jim Robinson – we were already working on a Thanksgiving weekend Heavy Manners show ad quickly decided to turn the evening into a tribute to Jim. With help from new Chicago pressing plant Smashed Plastic and a fun 2-Tone inspired design by Destroy Brand graphics, we cranked out a limited edition one time press of 200 7″ singles to benefit Jim’s family. If you can’t pick one up at the show, get it here. If you never got around to picking up our last Heavy Manners reissue project then here’s another chance as we have a couple boxes left on clear/white vinyl. In 2011 Chicago ska/reggae legends HEAVY MANNERS recorded their first new music since the early 80s: “Get Me Out Of Debt” is a fun, whimsical and witty 2 TONE ska dancer with great keyboards and sax! “Fight The Good Fight” is a darker, political conscious reggae tune ripe for fans of original Island Records sounds. The B side is a musicologist treat – an original 80’s tune recorded back in the day and finally unearthed! “Could Not Get Enuff” is nearly 6 minutes of PETER TOSH at the tail end of disco, wonderfully mixing Heavy Manners’ Jamaican riddims into dance styled 2-TONE meets Chicago grooves. PETER TOSH also provides backing vocals!!! Not to be missed! A sound that also was utilized by THE ENGLISH BEAT on later 12″ singles! Comes in CLEAR or WHITE vinyl – add to your 7″ vinyl order for only $5 more!
REPRESS has arrived! Debut 1994 album from New York City satanic ska punk band, produced by Bill Laswell. Thirteen upbeat skankers, flush with brass, drenched with irresistible melodies and infectious choruses. Originally self released, the album soon went global after being licensed by Moon Ska Records. Far beyond 2-Tone with a slight nod to Jamaica’s originators, Mephiskapheles birthed their own ska-based niche. Go SATAN! Go SKA! We also released the cassette tape for Cassette Store Day 2017, add one for the collection only 150 made! Their second album “Maximum Perversion” is also available on vinyl and tape from us!
It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 7 years since we released the second album from Indiana’s funky soul reggae ska masters, now they are a name known around the world! We were lucky enough to get one last small “dirty repress” from the original stampers (so don’t be picky if there’s a little crackle love!), so act fast once these are gone they are GONE. Only 50 guys!
Though themes are of heartbreak, disappointment, and social worries, the end all be all is “don’t stop, keep moving.” From the Muddy Banks of the Wabash River comes the Soul Sonic, Blues Drenched, Sounds of Reggae and Ska that is the GRR. Their debut “HOOSIER HOMEGROWN” instantly had the ska scene taking notice. Could this band really have only formed in 2006? Hard workin and constantly touring, GRR quickly built up a solid fan base by playing shows big and small all across the USA, including stints with THE SLACKERS, MOON INVADERS, and AGGROLITES. On this self titled second album, producer DAVE HILLAYRD enhances these powerful influences: Trojan Records, Studio one, Motown, Stax, NYC Ska, Toots & the Maytals, The Wailers, The Skatalites, Lee Perry/The Upsetters, The Slackers, The Aggrolites, Johnny Cash, James brown, Otis Redding & more. Its Motown & Kingston. Soul & Reggae. The result is brilliant, 14 amazing tunes that capture the high-energy that GRR have had at their shows since day #1. Green wax is sold out, black vinyl available. Housed in a two sided full color (well, at least green!) poster sleeve!
Two classic 90’s album from American ska pioneers THE TOASTERS are once again back on vinyl! “DUB 56” from 1994 is a Moon Ska NYC classic, back in print on dark grey marble vinyl in cool poster sleeve! A fantastic album, a highlight of the “third wave” – influenced heavily by British 2 Tone yet distinctly American. 14 tracks on vinyl: Direction, Freedom, Mona, Dancin’, Dub 56, Sweet Cherie, Tunisia, Little Hidden Secrets, Marlboro Man, Ain’t Huthin’, Razor Cut, Legal Shot, Midnight Hour, Goody Goody. A couple years ago when we were chatting to Bucket from THE TOASTERS, we realized that there were a handful of albums that NEVER appeared on vinyl including the amazing 2 TONE ARMY collection which included their biggest MTV2 video hits! The artwork is a tribute to iconic NYC SKA artist STEVE HEX who we lost a few years ago, this must have album includes the hits “I WASN’T GOING TO CALL YOU ANYWAY” and the title track “2 TONE ARMY”. 10 tracks, on dark grey marble vinyl. A truly fantastic record, one we are so proud to have our name on!
If you’re a manic collector make sure you pick up these two albums on limited edition cassette tape too!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from all of us at JUMP UP RECORDS! Last year we re-released the legendary CHRISTMA-SKA album on vinyl for the first time ever, and it was a huge hit with the entire pressing selling out in less than 3 weeks! Good news – we’ve re-pressed it again this year on marbled red vinyl. You’re asking yourself…wait… why didn’t I have this MOON SKA NYC CD in my collection back in the day? Well here’s why….this amazing holiday collection was licensed from MOON SKA to a Japanese company in 1997 – unless you were forking up the big bucks for an import copy it probably wasn’t on your radar. To top it off, the Japanese label ceased operations soon after and this CD became a true rarity!
In November 2014 Chicago and Los Angeles were lucky to have showcases with one of the sweetest soul voices in Jamaican music history, Studio One legend WINSTON “Mr Fix It” FRANCIS. The 60’s hitmaker was one of Coxson Dodd’s biggest singers, and his 1969 “Mr Fix It” LP featured the hit songs “Too Experienced”, “Same Old Song”, “Fools Fall In Love” plus the title track. His second album “California Dreaming” continued the tradition of soulful reggae covers, including “Yester Me Yester You” , “Groovy Situation”, “Always Something There To Remind Me” and the hit Mamas & The Papas tune that named the album. In between these albums WINSTON would release two tunes that would drive collectors crazy 45+ years later – “THE BREAK” under the moniker BOB MELODY, and “YOUR CHEATING HEART” – a duet with LLOYD ROBINSON. Both these original 7″ singles fetch INSANE amounts on eBay – yet strangely both tunes have never appeared on reissue – UNTIL NOW! We’ve got pink 7″ vinyl back in stock now!
Have you been keeping up with our Jamaican Oldies shows in Chicago? If so you know that Jamaican foundation ska legend CHARLEY ORGANAIRE is a regular fixture on the Chicago scene! THE harmonica sound on thousands of early ska sessions at Studio One, Treasure Isle, etc – he was also an accomplished singer / band leader / arranger / label owner who released singles in the 60s on his own ORGANAIRES imprint. The success of his Chicago appearances, dare we call it a “return to the scene”, has lead to a tremendous relationship with Minneapolis’ THE PRIZEFIGHTERS resulting in six tracks being recorded together in the Spring of 2014.
