FIREBUG (BRAZIL) “On The Move” CD (JUMP066 – OUT OF PRINT)

Brazil’s FIREBUG steps out of a music time machine every time they take the stage – vintage Jamaican sounds from the 60’s / early 70’s – the frantic pace of Ska, the soulful lyricism of Rocksteady, the depth of One-Drop reggae, and the psychedelic heights of Dub. Even with Brazil being the world’s second largest reggae market, the vast majority of Jamaican styles still remain unexplored with local fans and musicians. This is where Firebug comes in–creatively expanding on vintage riddims in order to keep the music’s history alive and vibrant for an entire new generation. Initially composed of two Brazilians and one relocated American, Firebug is singer/songwriter/guitarist Felipe Machado, drummer Rodrigo Cerqueira (formerly of Brazil’s Skuba and Seattle’s Easy Big Fella) and NYC bassist/producer Victor Rice (Easy Dub All Stars, Stubborn All Stars, Scofflaws, Version City). Soon after the release of the band’s self-titled first album, Bruno Cedola [bass], Olivier Dherte [guitar, vocals] and Leo Cunha [keyboards] joined the band, putting the finishing touches on this Jamaican music “DREAM TEAM” (as dubbed by FOLHA DE SAO PAULO, Brazil’s largest daily newspaper). Internationally, Firebug’s co-founder Victor Rice has received tremendous praise for his precision bass work on DUB SIDE OF THE MOON, the critically acclaimed Jamaicanization of the Pink Floyd classic. On Firebug’s sophomore effort “ON THE MOVE”, Victor Rice recruited fellow NYC ska/reggae veterans AGENT JAY (aka Crazy Baldhead) and DAVE HILYARD, both current members of THE SLACKERS. Toss in the big trombone of Bufford O’Sullivan (Scofflaws, Dub Is A Weapon) and you’ve got the best Brazilian-Jamaican-NYC melting pot in the history of Caribbean music sounds. ON THE MOVE is Firebug’s first release Stateside, delivering 11 gorgeous tracks that fully embrace the beauty and culture of South American paradise, yet sounding like a vintage JA album produced at Studio One, Beverley’s, or Dynamic. Estúdio El Rocha, São Paulo’s analogue haven was once again chosen for it’s mastery of vintage production techniques, with the final mix done at NYC’s legendary JAMMYLAND studios. Even though success seems to have come very quickly to Firebug, they have earned it all with old fashioned hard work, and now they are poised to become one of the great successes in Jamaican-Brazilian music for many, many years to come.
