Northern Soul shows significant, flowing transitions to almost all popular music styles like Country,R&B, Beat, Rock, Salsa, Reggae...you name it. Confused yet? Want us to get to the point? In essance, Northern Soul is the MUSIC and the LABEL of an English subculture. Just like Ska's Rude Boys, Punks, and Mods...it's origins lay back in the 60's. At that time some DJs in the North of England decided NOT to play the popular Soul music usually played in the London clubs any longer. Instead, they played rare Soul records from small INDEPENDENT LABELS with a stronger, more original sound. This "Rare Soul" attracted more and more loyal fans to their allnighters---then in1970, a journalist reported on this subculture and, needing a label to fall back on, named it "Northern Soul". The name has stuck ever since. What else can we tell you about Northern Soul nights? Dancing is key, DJ's are spinning rare singles into the twilight...and dress IS to impress, dictated by what social circle you run with (like Mods, for example). But one thing's for sure.....the rhythm of Northern Soul is a vibe all it's own, and one that you'll hear from these cool San Francisco cat's very soon! |
