In recent months we have been feeling nostalgic for those “quiet years” in the international ska / reggae scene. To read (false) articles that ska was “dead” in the early 2000’s is preposterous! In the early 2000’s we released album after album each and every year and helped (re) build the foundation – true REAL ska fans supported these record and bands and kept us going – THANK YOU! With that said we have restocked three of these albums from that time that out pals at Grover Records in Germany issued on vinyl. Two incredible albums from Austin Texas’ STINGER ATX originally released in 2002 & 2004, plus the wonderful 2006 album from Victor Rice reggae legends FIREBUG. The stock we have is EXTREMELY limited and won’t last long, and it is most likely the final copies we will have for the USA.
Washington DC’s Loving Paupers have been taking the world by storm with a broken hearted reggae vibe that appeals to lovers rock and roots fans alike. The Loving Paupers recorded their debut EP in 2016, working alongside Grammy Award winning Brazilian producer Victor Rice, and since have received rave reviews for performances at various festivals and their 2019 debut album “LINES” – ten melancholic songs that touch upon heartbreak and emotional dissidence, moody melodies enhanced once again by Victor Rice’s loving touch. It’s an album heavily influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Kinks, Zombies, The Supremes, to the late Gregory Issacs, Sugar Minott, and Dennis Brown. Featuring powerhouse lead vocalist Kelly Di Filippo, whose emotive style brings immediate comparisons to Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Jane Birkin, Kate Bush and even Joni Mitchell, in modern reggae circles the band is likened to recent output by Hollie Cook, The Frightnrs, and The Skints. Victor Rice dubbed the entire 10 songs from “LINES” which we first unleashed on our official Cassette Store Day release back in October. Of course vinyl fans wanted to hold a slab of wax in their hands and play these amazing dub versions on their platters! Limited edition of 250 copies on heavyweight black vinyl. We also did a limited run of 100 CDs that feature the vocal ans dubs! Happy Black Friday!
DUB IS A WEAPON celebrates the 12 year mark by finally releasing their earliest work on vinyl! ! Leader DAVE HAHN has been kicking around the New York music scene for a while, playing ska with THE SLACKERS and STUBBORN ALL STARS, Afrobeat with ANTIBALAS, plus working as a dub engineer for the EASY STAR ALL-STAR’S Dub Side of the Moon tour. Did we mention DIAW was the backing band for LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY’s 2006 tour? “FROM THE VAULTS” was recorded in 2001 in the heart of Brooklyn, with a truly all-star cast that has never been duplicated to date, including VICTOR RICE, EDDIE OCAMPO, VICTOR AXELROD (aka TICKLA), Jamaican legend LARRY McDONALD (worked with MARLEY, TOSH, TAJ MAHAL, GIL-SCOTT HERON, BAD BRAINS) plus CONGO ASHANTI ROY and ROB SYMEONN on vocals.
