The latest imports from BRIXTON RECORDS in Spain have arrived! First off is the brand new album from UK ska legends MAROON TOWN, who were formed in the mid 80’s and created a fantastic sonic cocktail of Jamaican ska, Latin/World rhythms, hip hop vocals and modern acid jazz funky/soul styles. Maroon Town’s classic early material was featured on over 45 compilations, including releases on top European revival imprints Staccato, Unicorn, and Skank. One of our all all time favorite albums from that time was “HIGH AND DRY”, songs like “NOSTALGIA” and “POUND TO THE DOLLAR” are stone cold hip hop ska classics! That energy and feel is back in full force on this brand new album “FREEDOM CALL” – a must have for old and new fans alike! Also just issued on vinyl for the first time is NEW YORK SKA JAZZ ENSEMBLE’s 2002 classic “MINOR MOOD” – featuring new jazz ska classics and reinterpretations of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and even Paul Simon. Last but not least, we have a handful of the NORTH EAST SKA JAZZ ORCHESTRA’s debut 7″ single featuring DAVE HILLYARD of The Slackers and FRED REITER of NYSJE. Great ska/swing from Italy!
Formed in Dallas, Texas in 2015 around a mutual love of vintage Jamaican music, the Boss Riot sound pays tribute to early reggae, ska, rock steady, and soul while continuing to push the creative envelope of the genres. The band stays rooted in a vintage sound yet delivers a modern twist, bringing to mind the pop sensibilities of the English Beat, The Untouchables or The Selecter. Lead by the the powerful pipes of Vicki Tovar, her colorful hair and stage intensity channels the spirits of Dusty Springfield and Nancy Sinatra. Boss Riot is comprised of veterans from the 90’s ska scene, including current members of Rude King and the founding member of Detroit’s pioneering band The Exceptions, whose recordings graced releases on Jump Up, Asian Man, and Moon Ska throughout the third wave. “Lace Up Straight” is the band’s 14 track debut album, following hot on the heals of Ska Brewing/Jump Up collections “Drink The Ska” and “Pressure Hop” which introduced Boss Riot to over 7000+ fans worldwide. Limited edition green vinyl (50 copies!) and hand assembled slimline CD limited to 100 copies.
We are so stoked to bring you two fantastic new albums from today’s top French bands! Those who have been ordering from Jump Up for years are very familiar with TWO TONE CLUB, their previous two albums co-released on Grover were constant fan favorites and one of our best import catalog titles over the years (both restocked see additional post). Their brand new album “DON’T LOOK BACK” is an incredible scorcher, tracks range from uptempo jazzy horn lead instrumental ska (think Tokyo Ska Paradise Orch), manic 2-TONE ala The Specials), scratchy guitar organ heavy skinhead reggae with DJ chat/shout vocals, loungey jazz lovers reggae, and even a vintage soul tune. If you aren’t familiar with Dave’s saxophone playing history, maybe you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of decades? He has been a gigging/touring musician since his teenage years, playing with HEPCAT, RANCID, STUBBORN ALL-STARS, Willie Williams, Stranger Cole, Glen Brown, Glen Adams, Archie Bell, and for the last 18 years, he has been the featured soloist with NYC’s legendary Ska band, THE SLACKERS. ROCKSTEADY 7, a fourteen year old all-star collective, is the band where Dave is able to showcase his unique style of Saxophone playing with extended Jazz improvisations over Reggae-Ska rhythms. As Dave explains, “I’m a freak stylistically. I’m a southern Californian raised kid who started out playing like Jamaican saxophonists, Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook. Then I moved to New York and got into classic American saxophone like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Illinois Jacquet. Then I went on the road and started to understand the blues. I got into Howling Wolf, Tbone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson.” Continue reading DAVE HILLYARD & ROCKSTEADY 7 “Friends And Enemies” LP (JUMP110LP) back in print! Though themes are of heartbreak, disappointment, and social worries, the end all be all is “don’t stop, keep moving.” From the Muddy Banks of the Wabash River comes the Soul Sonic, Blues Drenched, Sounds of Reggae and Ska that is the GRR. Their debut “HOOSIER HOMEGROWN” instantly had the ska scene taking notice. Could this band really have only formed in 2006? Hard workin and constantly touring, GRR quickly built up a solid fan base by playing shows big and small all across the USA, including stints with THE SLACKERS, MOON INVADERS, and AGGROLITES. On this self titled second album, producer DAVE HILLAYRD enhances these powerful influences: Trojan Records, Studio one, Motown, Stax, NYC Ska, Toots & the Maytals, The Wailers, The Skatalites, Lee Perry/The Upsetters, The Slackers, The Aggrolites, Johnny Cash, James brown, Otis Redding & more. Its Motown & Kingston. Soul & Reggae. The result is brilliant, 14 amazing tunes that capture the high-energy that GRR have had at their shows since day #1. Green wax housed in a two sided full color (well, at least green!) poster sleeve!
