One silver lining of the vinyl reissue world is that overlooked albums get a second chance, we are experiencing this euphoria with POLISH SKA and JIMMY JAZZ RECORDS! VESPA is a traditional ska/reggae band that has been around since 1995, their debut album “BRUJAJ SIE” is finally on vinyl plus we have a limited amount of their new 4 track 7″ vinyl EP in our bundle! This new EPranges from organ fueled uptempo early reggae, both instrumental and vocal, slow and dirty space age 70’s reggae, with both male and female vocal leads sung in Polish. ALIANS 2000 release “Rowne Prawa” got the double vinyl gatefold sleeve treatment – after listening to the record we keep asking ourselves “How did we miss this the first time around?”. What a fantastic record – at times it channels the late 80’s European revival sounds of THE BUSTERS, MR REVIEW, and NO SPORTS. Our fave tunes are the very 2-TONE ones with tight horns – and that minor key gives it the slight flavor of a former Soviet block nation. Mixed in are slower dubby punky reggae tunes, an homage to PETER TOSH on “Equal Rights” and two fantastic covers of THE CLASH. A manic accordion permeates the band’s sound throught, giving the record a bit of a Spaghetti Western feel – and when they abandon the ska altogether it’s fast manic punk with shades of Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly or THE POGUES ala Straight To Hell soundtrack. Yes, we think that this record is THAT good. Gatefold sleeve double vinyl import, sung in both English and Polish. Continue reading Polish SKA Power! Obviously, this collection was an immediate success because Paul Weller is a god across the British Empire! Limited edition repress on random marbled color vinyl, 100 copies only. Perennial faves KING HAMMOND, LYNVAL GOLDING (The Specials), and PRESSURE TENANTS (Laurel Aitken’s old backing band) all appear along with a who’s who of top UK acts: MEOW MEOWS, ERIN BALDWELL COLLECTIVE, AMPHETAMEANIES, BIG FAT PANDA, THE SKAPONES and THE BIG. This is your LAST CHANCE to get this amazing album on vinyl!!! Jamaican ska originators’ Grammy nominated 1994 album will be available for the first time on vinyl – an official selection for Record Store Day 2018! Recorded 30 years after the breakup of the original Skatalites, “Hi-Bop Ska” finds the band’s blend of R&B, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean music continuing to sound healthy and exuberant. Throughout the 1990s, the band’s studio/live ranks ranged from newcomers to survivors of the band’s classic 1960s lineup, including saxmen Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso, bassist Lloyd Brevett, drummer Lloyd Knibbs, and vocalist Doreen Shaffer. The Skatalites are joined here by several prominent guests including fellow Jamaican legends Toots Hibbert (of Toots & the Maytals) and Prince Buster; jazz improvisers Lester Bowie on trumpet, saxman David Murray, trombonist Steve Turre, and Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander. The jazzers get plenty of room to shine on this mostly instrumental album, from Alexander’s “Renewal” and Murray’s “Flowers for Albert” to remakes of iconic 60’s ska anthems “Man in the Street”, “Guns of Navarone”, “You’re Wondering Now”, and “Ska Ska Ska”. “Hi Bop Ska” harkens back to the heyday of Jamaican independence, when the freedom sounds of ska ruled the dancehalls. These dozen songs are an essential journey for fans who discovered ska from it’s Third Wave (Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Toasters, Mephiskapheles) and Second Wave (The Specials, Madness, English Beat), but is also a wonderful addition to the band’s short lived 1960’s output on Studio 1 and Island Records. We at JUMP UP are SO PROUD to finally give this album a breath of new life in 2018 – to an entire new music buying generation that are preferring to discover classics like this on vinyl.
After 90’s ska boom had come and gone in the USA, many albums released in the early 2000’s were simply missed by fans worldwide. Hopefully, you realize artists like THE SPECIALS and labels like JUMP UP continued to support ska during “the lean years”….labels ran to release other styles (dare I say emo), and ska bands “changed their sound” to avoid being called ska. Guess what? There were some cool ska albums released at the turn of the millenium, including 2 albums by THE SPECIALS! Both “SKINHEAD GIRL” and “CONQUERING RULER” dig into the TROJAN RECORDS soundbook, and the band’s sound was top notch lead by RODDY RADIATION, NEVILLE STAPLE, HORACE PANTER, and NEOL DAVIES. Well done MAD BUTCHER, releasing these records on vinyl give the albums a new lease on life and will be enjoyed by an entire generation of vinyl fans! Legendary 1991 alt rock/ska album on vinyl for the first time, adding 3 bonus tracks from the original sessions. Boston’s Bim Skala Bim are one of a handful of veteran ska bands that have kept ska in America alive through the decades, and for this set the group collaborated with Lou Giordano and other rock producers. The lyrics were more focused than on previous efforts, highlighting the group’s political engagement and familiarity with contemporary futuristic literature. Taking their cues from the jazz oriented Skatalites rather than British 2-Tone, this early release by the group’s five core members shows why they were one of the best. Dan Vitale’s compelling lead vocals and Jim Arhelger’s drums are firmly rooted in the rock arena, but they meet the band’s swelling horns and jazzy ska arrangements for a smooth, upbeat sound that’s paced at just the right tempo to demand dancing. For many of the band’s most devoted fans, “Bones” was the quintessential summer album, tunes like “Wandering Soul”, “In Our Midst”, “People In The World” and “At Wo’s” became the beach party soundtrack for college towns all across the Eastern seaboard. This has been in production for a LONG time (pressing mishaps out of our control) – but totally worth the wait! Limited edition of 500 with 200 on clear orange vinyl.
The wait is over! The SPECIALIZED Teenage Cancer Trust folks in the UK just released their BOSS 4xCD – a tribute to the original 60’s ska & reggae sounds. The Jump Up vinyl 7″ singles have JUST arrived – and we think this 4 song EP is absolutely brilliant!! One side is on a roots reggae Jamaican tip, while the other has a 2-TONE ska 80’s flair! Limited edition of 400 each and will go fast! FYI: these will be shooting across the pond and will arrive in the UK next week where they will be available on the Specialized website!
