If you aren’t familiar with Dave’s saxophone playing history, maybe you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of decades? He has been a gigging/touring musician since his teenage years, playing with HEPCAT, RANCID, STUBBORN ALL-STARS, Willie Williams, Stranger Cole, Glen Brown, Glen Adams, Archie Bell, and for the last 18 years, he has been the featured soloist with NYC’s legendary Ska band, THE SLACKERS. ROCKSTEADY 7, a fourteen year old all-star collective, is the band where Dave is able to showcase his unique style of Saxophone playing with extended Jazz improvisations over Reggae-Ska rhythms. As Dave explains, “I’m a freak stylistically. I’m a southern Californian raised kid who started out playing like Jamaican saxophonists, Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook. Then I moved to New York and got into classic American saxophone like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Illinois Jacquet. Then I went on the road and started to understand the blues. I got into Howling Wolf, Tbone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson.” Continue reading DAVE HILLYARD & ROCKSTEADY 7 are playing SNWMF 2018 – “Friends And Enemies” LP (JUMP110LP) back in print! It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 7 years since we released the second album from Indiana’s funky soul reggae ska masters, now they are a name known around the world! Only 50 guys!
Though themes are of heartbreak, disappointment, and social worries, the end all be all is “don’t stop, keep moving.” From the Muddy Banks of the Wabash River comes the Soul Sonic, Blues Drenched, Sounds of Reggae and Ska that is the GRR. Their debut “HOOSIER HOMEGROWN” instantly had the ska scene taking notice. Could this band really have only formed in 2006? Hard workin and constantly touring, GRR quickly built up a solid fan base by playing shows big and small all across the USA, including stints with THE SLACKERS, MOON INVADERS, and AGGROLITES. On this self titled second album, producer DAVE HILLAYRD enhances these powerful influences: Trojan Records, Studio one, Motown, Stax, NYC Ska, Toots & the Maytals, The Wailers, The Skatalites, Lee Perry/The Upsetters, The Slackers, The Aggrolites, Johnny Cash, James brown, Otis Redding & more. Its Motown & Kingston. Soul & Reggae. The result is brilliant, 14 amazing tunes that capture the high-energy that GRR have had at their shows since day #1. Green wax housed in a two sided full color (well, at least green!) poster sleeve!

Five years in the making….recorded in Chicago on three separate occasions, our split release with Happy As A Lark is finally a reality! In 2013, Derrick Morgan performed in Chicago for a Jamaican Oldies showcase at Mayne Stage. We asked Derrick if he was interested in recording a song while he was in town – and to our delight he said YES! Anthony from The Drastics had a country-reggae-ska themed project in the works under the alter-ego TECTONICS, he produced a version of the 1950’s Webb Pierce classic “There Stands The Glass” and suggested that Derrick Morgan would be a perfect fit. When we played the backing track to Derrick over a cellphone, he immediately knew the tune (of course!) and got excited to be part of this wonderful project. A year later we brought in Dennis Alcapone to Chicago for a Jamaican Oldies showcase – we thought to ourselves…let’s recreate those old 45s and have Dennis chat over the song that Derrick recorded a year earlier! A true DJ version on the flip! The project got shelved for a few years… but in 2018 Charlie Organaire went into the studio to play harmonica on the tune. It was finally complete! A very limited initial pressing is now available from Jump Up and Happy As Lark – we each have an exclusive color. Our copies are a golden yellow and it’s limited to 100 copies.
Not to be outdone is a new DJ promo limited edition 7″ single from lovers rock pioneer Susan Cadogan! Last year we released the extended vinyl version of her latest project produced by Mitch Giro. This new 7″ single featured two brand new tracks produced by Mitch – a gentle ska groover called “I Don’t Want Anybody But You” b/w a cool rock steady ae jewel called “The Girl Who Cried Over You”. Limited to 100 hand-stamped copies!
******BIG UPDATE*****Our pressing plant had some leftovers sitting down at the plant all this time! Random color vinyl on these last few copies, less that 75 left and they look pretty darn good! This is your LAST CHANCE to get this amazing album on vinyl!!! Jamaican ska originators’ Grammy nominated 1994 album will be available for the first time on vinyl – an official selection for Record Store Day 2018! Recorded 30 years after the breakup of the original Skatalites, “Hi-Bop Ska” finds the band’s blend of R&B, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean music continuing to sound healthy and exuberant. Throughout the 1990s, the band’s studio/live ranks ranged from newcomers to survivors of the band’s classic 1960s lineup, including saxmen Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso, bassist Lloyd Brevett, drummer Lloyd Knibbs, and vocalist Doreen Shaffer. The Skatalites are joined here by several prominent guests including fellow Jamaican legends Toots Hibbert (of Toots & the Maytals) and Prince Buster; jazz improvisers Lester Bowie on trumpet, saxman David Murray, trombonist Steve Turre, and Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander. The jazzers get plenty of room to shine on this mostly instrumental album, from Alexander’s “Renewal” and Murray’s “Flowers for Albert” to remakes of iconic 60’s ska anthems “Man in the Street”, “Guns of Navarone”, “You’re Wondering Now”, and “Ska Ska Ska”. “Hi Bop Ska” harkens back to the heyday of Jamaican independence, when the freedom sounds of ska ruled the dancehalls. These dozen songs are an essential journey for fans who discovered ska from it’s Third Wave (Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Toasters, Mephiskapheles) and Second Wave (The Specials, Madness, English Beat), but is also a wonderful addition to the band’s short lived 1960’s output on Studio 1 and Island Records. We at JUMP UP are SO PROUD to finally give this album a breath of new life in 2018 – to an entire new music buying generation that are preferring to discover classics like this on vinyl.
