Skanking Lizard originated in Chicago in 1978 by a group of friends who had a deep love for reggae music, and by the 80’s this line up of northside musicians became Chicago’s original performing reggae band. Skanking Lizard was no island tribute band, they concentrated on developing their own sound which incorporated American roots rock with reggae rhythms. In the 1980’s, they became one of Chicago’s favorite festival bands and toured with the likes of Toots and the Maytals, Mighty Diamonds, Steel Pulse, Neville Brothers, and the B-52’s. They released the “Jesse James/Mushroom” 7 inch single in 1983, charting on Jamaica’s Top 40 List. In 1984 lead singer Alan “Blood” Lery released “Kingston Meets Chicago” 12” EP, which was recorded at Channel One Studios in Kingston and featured Jamaican legends Santa Davis on drums, Ranchie McLean on bass, Skully on percussion, Ansell Collins on organ, Howard Yukon of the Blue Riddim Band on guitar, and Shay Jones on backing vocals. The producer was Jimmy Becker of Blue Riddim band, a famed studio harmonica player who also was a member of Skanking Lizard in the early 1980’s. Both original vinyl releases appear on the band’s first ever anthology “Original Chicago Reggae”, out now in celebration of Record Store Day! Eleven tracks including never before released studio gems, including two ska tunes from 1988 recorded as a tribute to 2-Tone! Second Pressing on Yellow Vinyl out now!

LONG LOST ALBUM is back and now on VINYL and 8 TRACK! The Skatalites are more than a band, they are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn’t merely define the sound of Jamaica, but WERE the sound in the ’60s. Frequently credited as the originators of ska — the Skatalites’ various members banded together as both an original group and the often uncredited backing band for artists/producers such as Prince Buster and Duke Reid. Although the group officially existed in its original incarnation for less than 18 months (1964-1965), its members brought their signature styles to thousands of the island’s releases. Following a handful of reunions in the ’70s and early ’80s, the Skatalites re-formed for good in 1986 and, over subsequent decades, have included a rotating lineup of both original members and newcomers responsible for late-period highlights like 1994’s “Hi-Bop Ska” and 2000’s “Bashaka”, now reissued on vinyl for the first time. “BASHAKA” is an album lost in time, plagued by a label bankruptcy and released when mainstream’s support for the genre had waned. Simply put, this brilliant album never got the credit it deserves! Original members Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Lester Sterling and Cedric Brooks lead the charge into scorching ska instrumentals and rootsy jazz reggae, Doreen Shaffer adds beautiful vocals on ska tunes “Oh baby” and “Reach for the Sky”, while special guest Ken Boothe delivers the mid-tempo groover “I Never Knew”. Brand new updated art by Chema Skandal, repress on clear yellow / orange vinyl limited to 200 copies. 8 TRACK edition of 30 for the ultimate collector housed in an original ISLAND RECORDS sleeve! Comes with a FREE Jamaican music timeline poster!
Jamaican ska legends’ latest album “Platinum Ska” finally repressed on vinyl with three bonus dubs. The group has been at the forefront of ska music since the mid-’60s, and this studio album is their first recordings to follow the band’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014. The Skatalites built the foundation for Jamaican music, and was part of it’s evolution as it morphed from ska to rock steady then reggae, helping give birth to household names like Toots and The Maytals, Lee Perry, and of course Bob Marley & The Wailers. Since re-forming in the ’80s, The Skatalites have been through their share of transformation and have sadly seen most of the band’s original members pass on. Each of today’s existing members were hand-picked by the band’s original members to play, and they continue to hold down the tradition by performing at some of the most prestigious festivals around the world. Two of the tracks included on “Platinum Ska” feature original 60’s era drummer Lloyd Knibb (who passed away in 2011), plus it captures alto sax player Lester Sterling and vocalist Doreen Shaffer, the last two living original Skatalites members. The album was mixed in Mali and also includes guest appearances by legendary Malian musicians Assaba Dramé and Madou Sidiki Diabaté. Simply put, “Platinum Ska” is a testament to some of the greatest Jamaican musicians the world has ever seen, and Jump Up is proud to preserve this legacy once again with a limited vinyl edition. Limited repress on metallic marble and classic black vinyl.
First time on wax for Jamaican ska originators’ 1996 masterpiece, green vinyl edition with poster insert exclusive for Record Store Day. Produced by Joe Ferry (Big Ska Band, SKAndolous All Stars) and band leader Tommy McCook, On this set original 60’s players are still going strong – lead by the saxophone trio of Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, and Lester Sterling, drummer Lloyd Knibbs, bassist Lloyd Brevett, and vocalist Doreen Shaffer. The band revisits 60’s gems like “Phoenix City” , and “El Pussycat” while creating many new classics including “Skalloween”, “Trip To Mars” and “Skamania”. The Skatalites perfected the big-band ska sound while backing some of the finest ska and rocksteady artists in the 60’s, and this album is another crowning jewel in their lifelong goal to party like it’s 1964! This official RSD 2019 title has been out of print for ages, but we recently received stranded stock from a few overseas distributors, which we reconditioned for sale once again. Snatch these up!

The Skunks were a third wave ska band formed in 1988 by a group of high school friends from suburban Maryland. They recorded three albums, performed extensively in the Washington, DC/Baltimore, Maryland area, and toured across the United States. “Chaos in Skaville” was the band’s first album, issues as a limited self-released cassette in 1991. The success of this release saw the band’s schedule become much more active, and during the summer of 1992 the band toured with The Toasters including legendary gigs at he Masquerade in Atlanta, Wilmington NC, Madison & Milwaukee WI and at Cabaret Metro in Chicago. The tour culminated, on February 27, 1993, with Moon Ska’s Skalapalooza at The Ritz in New York City, where The Skunks appeared with The Toasters, Bad Manners, The Skatalites, The Scofflaws, and Ruder Than You. After the tour, the Skunks signed with Moon Ska and shortly thereafter, “Chaos in Skaville” appeared in Moon’s catalog, where it was listed as MR034. Flying Vipers’ sound is of another time and place! For the first time on vinyl, the original cassette releases from the Flying Vipers are together on one heavyweight record. Recorded and mixed on a Tascam cassette 8-track, the music is a loving tribute dank 70s dub reggae, deeply in debt to the original Jamaican engineers of the ’70s who turned their mixing consoles into the lead instrument à la Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby. Twelve dubwise instrumentals drenched in spring reverb, cosmic tape delay and mystic vibes. The Vipers lay down steady drum & bass driven rhythms with jazz tinged melodies and post-punk attitude, the songs are manipulated with twists and turns of the console, saturated tape delays and exaggerated EQ until the track becomes something new. Available on Emerald Green clear vinyl and Volcanic Copper metallic vinyl each limited to 250 copies.
Note: this is NOT part of the 2022 subscription clubs b/c we have so many releases coming out this year!
Flying Vipers’ sound is of another time and place. Deeply in debt to the original Jamaican engineers of the ’70s who turned their mixing consoles into the lead instrument, the Vipers lay down steady drum & bass driven rhythms with jazz tinged melodies and post-punk attitude. Recorded and mixed on a vintage cassette 8-track in a dank basement in Waltham Massachusetts, the songs are manipulated with twists and turns of the console, saturated tape delays and exaggerated EQ until the track becomes something new. Cuttings is the Vipers first full length album, building on the foundation of The Green & Copper Tape EPs while adding more horns, vintage synths, and eccentric effects. The band may have been begrudgingly prophetic when they released the first single “Two Twenties Clash” in February 2020, as shortly after the world turned upside down dealing with the Covid-19 crisis and America struggles with reconciling its racist foundations. Within its 12 instrumental tracks, Cuttings is a sonic search for meditation amidst the madness. Limited edition cassette tape 100 copies (SOLD OUT). We are so pleased to welcome the Vipers to the Jump Up Records roster!
