THE SCOFFLAWS self titled LP vinyl – 30th Anniversary Edition! (REPRESS FALL 2022)

***OUT OF STOCK, REPRESS FALL 2022***The Scofflaws are a New York-based ska band that debuted in 1988. Known for their rambunctious live shows, technically proficient horn solos and tight arrangements, the Scofflaws were one of the top third wave ska acts of the ’90s and one of the most beloved bands on the now-defunct Moon Ska label, as well as the center and focal point of the once-thriving Long Island ska scene. The Scofflaws early sound was characterized by strong R&B and jazz influences as well as eclectic covers of such songs as Henry Mancini’s “A Shot in the Dark” and Danny Elfman’s theme for Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, while original songs like “Rudy’s Back”, “Paul Getty” and “William Shatner” became cult favorites due to the offbeat lyrics and quirky vocal stylings of bandleader Richard “Sammy” Brooks, co-founder Mike Drance and trombonist Buford O’Sullivan. Their self-titled debut studio album was released in 1991 by Moon Records, followed by Ska in Hi Fi in 1995, the concert recording Live! Vol. 1 in 1996, and their third studio album, Record of Convictions, in 1998. They toured the United States several times, including stints as the openers for Desmond Dekker and Bad Manners. The band’s lineup saw frequent changes and served as a springboard for numerous New York ska musicians, original co-frontman Mike Drance left in 1994 to form the Bluebeats, bassist Victor Rice went on to be a founding member of the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and continue a career in music production, and Buford O’Sullivan played for The Toasters and Easy Star All Stars. Although the Scofflaws have not released a studio recording since 1998, Brooks continues to lead the band in live performances within the New York area.  We are so excited to release their 1991 debut album on vinyl for he first time ever, on blue and yellow variations limited to 150 each. Yellow VINYL NOW SOLD OUT. Sorry!

They released 4 limited edition cassettes before the US third wave kicked into full gear, and this release compiles all 16 songs from these tapes. Songs songs range from happy-go-lucky uptempo 2-Tone ska with a strong sax lead (think Madness or Bad Manners) to progressive roots reggae with a rock guitar lead and brooding 80’s keyboard. We first issued these tracks for CASSETTE STORE DAY back in October, and received some amazing press from the Chicago Reader – who did a full feature on the release including an interview with founding member Paul Schroeder. Read all about that HERE. Continue reading Last Copies RSD 2017: RUDE GUEST Lost Chicago Ska 1982-1993″ LP vinyl / CD / TAPE

Reggae Guitar Legend’s Debut Solo album! ANDY BASSFORD “Harder They Strum” LP vinyl / 8 TRACK TAPE sold out

Andy Bassford, born in Hartford, Connecticut, is the reggae legend you’ve never heard of. After initially playing several years in rock, reggae, latin jazz, and country bands, he then was discovered by Horace Andy, which led to his recording debut on the classic album ‘In The Light’ in 1977. In 1980 he went to Jamaica and began playing on sessions with the Roots Radics. Soon after he joined Lloyd Parks and We The People, thus performing or recording with nearly every reggae artist of the era, most notably Dennis Brown. Upon his return to the US in late 1980’s he joined Toots and the Maytals among many others and became the house guitarist for the seminal Studio One label. Currently, Andy performs internationally in Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander’s Harlem-Kingston Express reggae-jazz fusion project, with whom he has also recorded two albums. In 2003, he was honored by the Jamaica Federation of Musicians for Outstanding Contributions to the Jamaican Music Industry, one of the only-non Jamaicans to receive this award. In 2019, he won his first Grammy as a composer and guitarist on Sting & Shaggy’s “44/876”, which took the honor of best Reggae album. Andy Bassford’s first ever solo album “The Harder They Strum” pays homage to the movie and album that lured Andy into the wonderful world of Jamaican music.
