Minneapolis ska, rock steady, early reggae band (with SOUL!) got their vinyl debut on JUMP UP! This SPECIAL EDITION has some different tracks than the CD, including alternative mixes and versions, instrumentals, and a dub from Anthony of THE DRASTICS.
Side A: Brujeria, Follow My Sound, Karma, Before Tonight, Hypocrite, There’ll Be A Day
Side B: Moonlight, Take More Time, Ghost In The Night, Truth And Lies, Fibbers Dub
“Follow My Sound” is the debut full-length release from THE PRIZEFIGHTERS, who’ve been at the top of the Minnesota ska scene for the past 5 years, playing their brand of soul infused ska and skinhead / early reggae.
A 7-piece band featuring saxophone, trombone, and organ supplementing the guitars and drums, THE PRIZEFIGHTERS are truly one of the up-and-comers on the US scene. A band that combines heavy soul with real 60s Jamaican ska and early reggae, a must for fans of DEAL’S GONE BAD, AGGROLITES, THE SLACKERS, MOON INVADERS or THE SOULSTEPPERS.
Review from DTHROG SKA BLOG:
The lead song on the album is broken into two tracks “Intro” and “Outside My Window”. The use a dual guitar format with a similar sound as you’d see in a Skatalites song. They emphasize some beats heavily and use backing vocals alongside a fairly catchy groove. “Hypocrite” is next with a heavy Slackers sounding influence and is the best song so far. “Truth And Lies” and “Storms” aren’t bad songs, but they don’t pack nearly as much catchy punch as the best songs on the album. “Before Tonight” ends the first half of the album in great fashion. I really like the walking bass line and the chorus melodies are excellent. This is the best song on the album and features a rare happy theme.
The title track “Follow My Sound” kicks off the second half of the album and is another outstanding track. I think it would have been better to kick the album off with “Before Tonight” and “Follow My Sound” because they are the band’s best material. Next are 60s inspired “Karma” and the instrumental “Brujeria”. An infectious organ melody kicks off “Take Some Time”. Well-done backing vocals add a lot to the song. The mood is sad, but the song is catchy regardless. “There’ll Be A Day” is another outstanding track with great hooks.
