Grover Vinyl Classics: SENIOR ALL STARS “Elated” LP (jazz reggae) & “RELATED” LP (dubs)

For more than 20 years German band the SENIOR ALL STARS  have dedicated themselves to the instrumental form of Jamaican music. Reggae, jazz, dub: the three terms still define the framework in which the sound of the all-stars has changed and developed. In terms of composition and play, the band is deeply rooted in the reggae of the 70s and 80s, the musicians go one step further in composition, interaction and sound and create their personal continental-european dub-reggae style. In 2017 their ninth album “Elated” was released then soon after corresponding dub versions on “Related”. Both albums new restocked by popular demand!

REPRESS: FLYING VIPERS “Cuttings” LP vinyl on weedy green vinyl

Flying Vipers’ sound is of another time and place. Deeply in debt to the original Jamaican engineers of the ’70s who turned their mixing consoles into the lead instrument, the Vipers lay down steady drum & bass driven rhythms with jazz tinged melodies and post-punk attitude. Recorded and mixed on a vintage cassette 8-track in a dank basement in Waltham Massachusetts, the songs are manipulated with twists and turns of the console, saturated tape delays and exaggerated EQ until the track becomes something new.  Cuttings is the Vipers first full length album, building on the foundation of The Green & Copper Tape EPs while adding more horns, vintage synths, and eccentric effects. The band may have been begrudgingly prophetic when they released the first single “Two Twenties Clash” in February 2020, as shortly after the world turned upside down dealing with the Covid-19 crisis and America struggles with reconciling its racist foundations. Within its 12 instrumental tracks, Cuttings is a sonic search for meditation amidst the madness.  Limited edition cassette tape 100 copies (SOLD OUT).  We are so pleased to welcome the Vipers to the Jump Up Records roster!

THE LOVING PAUPERS / VICTOR RICE “Lines In Dub” LP vinyl / CD

Washington DC’s Loving Paupers have been taking the world by storm with a broken hearted reggae vibe that appeals to lovers rock and roots fans alike.  The Loving Paupers recorded their debut EP in 2016, working alongside Grammy Award winning Brazilian producer Victor Rice, and since have received rave reviews for performances at various festivals and their 2019 debut album “LINES” – ten melancholic songs that touch upon heartbreak and emotional dissidence, moody melodies enhanced once again by Victor Rice’s loving touch. It’s an album heavily influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Kinks, Zombies, The Supremes, to the late Gregory Issacs, Sugar Minott, and Dennis Brown. Featuring powerhouse lead vocalist Kelly Di Filippo, whose emotive style brings immediate comparisons to Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Jane Birkin, Kate Bush and even Joni Mitchell, in modern reggae circles the band is likened to recent output by Hollie Cook, The Frightnrs, and The Skints. Victor Rice dubbed the entire 10 songs from “LINES” which we first unleashed on our official Cassette Store Day release back in October. Of course vinyl fans wanted to hold a slab of wax in their hands and play these amazing dub versions on their platters! Limited edition of 250 copies on heavyweight black vinyl.  We also did a limited run of 100 CDs that feature the vocal ans dubs!

DAVE HILLYARD & ROCKSTEADY 7 “Friends And Enemies” LP (JUMP110LP – OUT OF PRINT)

If you aren’t familiar with Dave’s saxophone playing history, maybe you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of decades? He has been a gigging/touring musician since his teenage years, playing with HEPCAT, RANCID, STUBBORN ALL-STARS, Willie Williams, Stranger Cole, Glen Brown, Glen Adams, Archie Bell, and for the last 18 years, he has been the featured soloist with NYC’s legendary Ska band, THE SLACKERS. ROCKSTEADY 7, a fourteen year old all-star collective, is the band where Dave is able to showcase his unique style of Saxophone playing with extended Jazz improvisations over Reggae-Ska rhythms. As Dave explains, “I’m a freak stylistically. I’m a southern Californian raised kid who started out playing like Jamaican saxophonists, Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook. Then I moved to New York and got into classic American saxophone like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Illinois Jacquet. Then I went on the road and started to understand the blues. I got into Howling Wolf, Tbone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson.” Continue reading DAVE HILLYARD & ROCKSTEADY 7 “Friends And Enemies” LP (JUMP110LP – OUT OF PRINT)

DUB AS A WEAPON – “ARMED & DANGEROUS” LP (JUMPDUB085LP) – OUT OF PRINT

Brooklyn’s DUB IS A WEAPON has been on the fast track over the past few years, recently becoming LEE SCRATCH PERRY’s permanent backing band. Although many fine musicians have performed within the ranks of DUB IS A WEAPON, two men have been the catalysts since day one: DAVE HAHN, a man who has traveled the world as a guitarist with Continue reading DUB AS A WEAPON – “ARMED & DANGEROUS” LP (JUMPDUB085LP) – OUT OF PRINT

THE DRASTICS “WAITING” CD (JUMP079)

2006’s Chicago Massive was perhaps a bridge too far for the Drastics, a sprawling two-CD set that, while eminently entertaining, was at times a study in excess. Waiting, in contrast, returns the group to their roots, a sharp, tight set that’s a potent reminder of the band’s power to thrill. Every number within is a fascinating aural journey, with Anthony Abbinanti‘s studio wizardry as crucial to the trip as the Continue reading THE DRASTICS “WAITING” CD (JUMP079)
