MAN-LIKE-DEVIN “Wheel & Shoulder” LP / CD – Acoustic Ska Rocksteady & Reggae

Devin Morrison aka Man-Like-Devin is a songwriter, guitarist and collector of Jamaican music born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. In 1999 he co-founded Los Angeles roots-reggae group The Expanders. They spent the next decade playing in and around the L.A. area as part of the city’s then-thriving ska, rocksteady and early reggae scene. During that time they also performed throughout California as the backing band for many of their Jamaican musical heroes including Alton Ellis, Leonard Dillon of The Ethiopians, The Wailing Souls, The Maytones, Pat Kelly, Roy Shirley, Stranger Cole, Prince Jazzbo, Willi Williams, The Cables, and Winston Jarrett. The Expanders released four studio albums from 2011-2018, the latter two of which debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Chart. In 2018 Morrison and The Expanders parted ways on friendly terms, he began writing a solo acoustic record and teamed up with long-time friend Roger Rivas (The Aggrolites, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Jason Mraz) to record it. Man-Like-Devin’s first acoustic solo record Wheel And Shoulder: Acoustic Reggae, Rocksteady & Ska Vol I was recorded at Rivas Studios and Man-Like Studios from October 2019 to October 2020 and was be released on the Rootfire Cooperative label. The full-length LP is a completely acoustic album with no electric instruments that features Morrison’s GRAMMY-nominated brother Patrick Morrison on upright bass, banjo and lead acoustic guitars, Devin’s father Tom Morrison on harmonica, and The California Honeydrops. Beautiful ska & reggae with a Jamaican mento lean, we released the cassette version and CD in late 2021, and we are now are proud to carry the vinyl in the webshop!

San Diego Ska Legends: UNSTEADY “Three’s The Charm” LP + 7 inches!

Formed in 1992, “San Diego’s mutated ska collective” Unsteady originally featured two members of local ska band the Donkey Show, guitarist Chris “Creedy” Bates and drummer Kent Graves, along with sax / vocalist John Roy, who’d been with a late-’80s local ska band called the Gangbusters. They were soon joined by keyboardist Kevin “Baby” Hewitt and bassist Paul Howland from the original local Wallflowers. Later, drummer Jimmy Boom replaced Graves, and new members were added like Clay Elliot (sax) and Jon Fisher (trumpet). Their 1996 debut album Tightrope (Immune Records) was followed by 1997’s Double or Nothing (Asian Man Records) and Live in the Studio (2001).  After a prolonged period of inactivity, they reunited to play several live shows in summer 2010, continuing to get together from time to time. In 2017 they went single crazy releasing “LIAR” b/w MR BURU” and “The Most Important Person” b/w “Self Made Man” plus a split with the Satanic Puppeteer Orchestra and their tune “SWAY”. Subsequent gig dates found vintage members John Roy and Kevin “Baby” Hewitt now reunited with bassist Paul Howland, although Howland was playing guitar this time around, along with a band that fluctuated from six to nine or more members. Fast forward to 2021 and John Roy is taking over the world with his studio project SMOKE & MIRRORS SOUND SYSTEM, yet he still finds time to release the brand new UNSTEADY album “THIRD TIME’S A CHARM”  that blends ska with bordertown radio, add a dash of geek, lounge, jump, circus, and street corner busking – that’s close to the Unsteady sound! Clear green vinyl, plus we have all the 7 inches mentioned in a bundle as well!

AMTY Swedish Bundle: HJALMAR B ALL STARS (feat Lee Scratch Perry) “Gin Och Ish” 10″ LP + SPOKSTAN “Hal I Betongen” LP

Hjalmar B Allstars are a boss reggae / rocksteady band from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed in 2019. Following their well received debut 7 inch single “Hisingen Reggae” in 2020 – this 6 track mini-LP is full of classic vintage Jamaican sounds with female vocals plus a track featuring LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY. The pressing is limited to 200 copies and this is the only batch we will receive, don’t miss out! We’re offering this 10″ as part of a bundle with a very cool 2019 release on AMTY Records that we slept on by accident and recently discovered! That release is by Spökstan (Swedish for Ghost Town), their first album features twelve dirty 2-Tone ska/punky reggae-titles in Swedish, the line up is with members from The Crooked Beat (reggae/ska), Congoman Crew (reggae), Makabert Fynd (hardcore punk) and Paraden (reggae). Don’t let the doomish cover fool you, this album has an early 90’s / European Ska Explosion feel more than a punk-ska lean, some of the songs lend themselves towards The Loafers or an early Mark Foggo loose faster ska style. Very enjoyable!

REPRESSED: SKANKING LIZARD “Original Chicago Reggae 1978-1996” LP anthology

Skanking Lizard originated in Chicago in 1978 by a group of friends who had a deep love for reggae music, and by the 80’s this line up of northside musicians became Chicago’s original performing reggae band. Skanking Lizard was no island tribute band, they concentrated on developing their own sound which incorporated American roots rock with reggae rhythms. In the 1980’s, they became one of Chicago’s favorite festival bands and toured with the likes of Toots and the Maytals, Mighty Diamonds, Steel Pulse, Neville Brothers, and the B-52’s. They released the “Jesse James/Mushroom” 7 inch single in 1983, charting on Jamaica’s Top 40 List. In 1984 lead singer Alan “Blood” Lery released “Kingston Meets Chicago” 12” EP, which was recorded at Channel One Studios in Kingston and featured Jamaican legends Santa Davis on drums, Ranchie McLean on bass, Skully on percussion, Ansell Collins on organ, Howard Yukon of the Blue Riddim Band on guitar, and Shay Jones on backing vocals. The producer was Jimmy Becker of Blue Riddim band, a famed studio harmonica player who also was a member of Skanking Lizard in the early 1980’s. Both original vinyl releases appear on the band’s first ever anthology “Original Chicago Reggae”, out now in celebration of Record Store Day! Eleven tracks including never before released studio gems, including two ska tunes from 1988 recorded as a tribute to 2-Tone! Second Pressing on Yellow Vinyl out now!
