After 90’s ska boom had come and gone in the USA, many albums released in the early 2000’s were simply missed by fans worldwide. Hopefully, you realize artists like THE SPECIALS and labels like JUMP UP continued to support ska during “the lean years”….labels ran to release other styles (dare I say emo), and ska bands “changed their sound” to avoid being called ska. Guess what? There were some cool ska albums released at the turn of the millenium, including 2 albums by THE SPECIALS! Both “SKINHEAD GIRL” and “CONQUERING RULER” dig into the TROJAN RECORDS soundbook, and the band’s sound was top notch lead by RODDY RADIATION, NEVILLE STAPLE, HORACE PANTER, and NEOL DAVIES. Well done MAD BUTCHER, releasing these records on vinyl give the albums a new lease on life and will be enjoyed by an entire generation of vinyl fans! Continue reading Restocked! THE SPECIALS “Conquering Ruler” & “Skinhead Girl” LP vinyl in stock now!

The Skunks were a third wave ska band formed in 1988 by a group of high school friends from suburban Maryland. They recorded three albums, performed extensively in the Washington, DC/Baltimore, Maryland area, and toured across the United States. “Chaos in Skaville” was the band’s first album, issues as a limited self-released cassette in 1991. The success of this release saw the band’s schedule become much more active, and during the summer of 1992 the band toured with The Toasters including legendary gigs at he Masquerade in Atlanta, Wilmington NC, Madison & Milwaukee WI and at Cabaret Metro in Chicago. The tour culminated, on February 27, 1993, with Moon Ska’s Skalapalooza at The Ritz in New York City, where The Skunks appeared with The Toasters, Bad Manners, The Skatalites, The Scofflaws, and Ruder Than You. After the tour, the Skunks signed with Moon Ska and shortly thereafter, “Chaos in Skaville” appeared in Moon’s catalog, where it was listed as MR034. Flying Vipers’ sound is of another time and place. Deeply in debt to the original Jamaican engineers of the ’70s who turned their mixing consoles into the lead instrument, the Vipers lay down steady drum & bass driven rhythms with jazz tinged melodies and post-punk attitude. Recorded and mixed on a vintage cassette 8-track in a dank basement in Waltham Massachusetts, the songs are manipulated with twists and turns of the console, saturated tape delays and exaggerated EQ until the track becomes something new. Cuttings is the Vipers first full length album, building on the foundation of The Green & Copper Tape EPs while adding more horns, vintage synths, and eccentric effects. The band may have been begrudgingly prophetic when they released the first single “Two Twenties Clash” in February 2020, as shortly after the world turned upside down dealing with the Covid-19 crisis and America struggles with reconciling its racist foundations. Within its 12 instrumental tracks, Cuttings is a sonic search for meditation amidst the madness. Limited edition cassette tape 100 copies (SOLD OUT). We are so pleased to welcome the Vipers to the Jump Up Records roster!
Washington DC’s Loving Paupers formed in 2015, featuring a talented cast of established and diverse regional musicians, including current and former members of third wave ska legends The Pietasters and The Smooths. Make no mistake, The Loving Paupers are a reggae/dub outfit, but their music is heavily influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Kinks, Zombies, The Supremes, to the late Gregory Issacs, Sugar Minott, and Dennis Brown. Featuring powerhouse lead vocalist Kelly Di Filippo, whose emotive style brings immediate comparisons to Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Jane Birkin, Kate Bush and even Joni Mitchell, in modern reggae circles the band is likened to recent output by Hollie Cook, The Frightnrs, and The Skints. The Loving Paupers recorded their debut EP in 2016, working alongside Grammy Award winning Brazilian producer Victor Rice, and since have received rave reviews for performances at various festivals, to venues such as DC’s 9:30 Club. “Lines” is the band’s debut full length album – ten melancholic songs that touch upon heartbreak and emotional dissidence, moody melodies enhanced once again by Victor Rice’s loving touch. Broken hearted roots reggae. Dreamy Lovers Rock vibes. CD version includes a bonus album of dubs by Victor Rice.

The Toasters originally released their debut US album SKABOOM back in 1987, on the Celluloid label. The album is often stated as being the origin of modern, or “third-wave” ska in the United States. It followed the RECRIMINATIONS and EAST SIDE BEAT EPs that were released both in the USA and UK, introducing the world to a fresh new wave-y ska sound that was uniquely American yet linked to 2-TONE through secret producer JOE JACKSON. Two years later, THE TOASTERS’ official “debut” album POOLSHARK arrived via the UK label Unicorn, yet six tracks from that set were culled for inclusion on the legendary debut American full-length named SKABOOM. That set was brasher, brighter, and more emphatically ska driven than their earlier material, albeit with eclectic backdrops that ranged from the surf-side to the juke joint. Now boasting a brass section, and two new vocalists, THE TOASTERS’ sound was significantly shifting while the lineup continued expanding. By the time they came to record SKABOOM, the group had ballooned into an 11-piece aggregate. The resulting high adrenaline album found the band in top form, their playing extremely tight, and the arrangements increasingly intricate and innovative.
