NEW YORK SKA JAZZ ENSEMBLE “Break Thru” LP / “Minor Moods” LP / Live In Gouvy LP

It’s hard to believe that we now have fourteen NYSJE albums to enjoy! Quite an accomplishment in today’s music world, and maybe even more impressive for a “modern” traditional ska band. Think back to the humble beginnings of Rocksteady Freddie when he left The Toasters to start this wonderful project in the 90s – for us it’s crazy to think that the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble was the first ska concert at the Chicago House of Blues! As always you can expect top notch jazzy arrangements of foundation Jamaican sounds, over the years the players have changed but the vibe and energy remain the same. Freddie Reiter will never steer you wrong on these ten glorious tracks! Includes a fun version of “Love & Affection” and a tribute to the late great Tom Petty with “Learning To Fly”. “Break Thru” is a great mix of instrumental and vocal tracks that covers many Caribbean styles, of course all channeled through American jazz / blues arrangements that’s unique to this long-standing ensemble. Get This! Continue reading NEW YORK SKA JAZZ ENSEMBLE “Break Thru” LP / “Minor Moods” LP / Live In Gouvy LP

JAH JAZZ ORCHESTRA “Introducing” LP / WILD MAN RIDDIM “Worldwide Frequency” LP – Modern Ska Jazz Classics!

Back in stock, first shipment sold out in a week! Comprised mainly of Swiss and French jazz musicians with a serious love of ’60s-era Jamaican music, Jah Jazz Orchestra is a superb ensemble that is as equally comfortable playing ska, rocksteady, and reggae as they are jazz. “Introducing” is a fantastic debut, recorded with a warm feel and choc full of Jamaican 60’s ska classics as well as American jazz standards. A must for fans of “laid back” Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra vibes, Western Standard Time,  NY Ska Jazz Ensemble, or The (Brooklyn) Attractors. Another amazing Jamaican jazz ska classic came out in 2017 from Swedish band WILD MAN RIDDIM, their second album “Worldwide Frequency” “is the result of many spontaneous improvisational moments. The whole album was recorded in the old fashioned way: live, on tape, in 7 hours, and reflects WMR as they further explore the links between ska, jazz and reggae, showing without complexes the bridge they have built that spans from the tradition of the Scandinavian jazz school to the warm passion of ska and reggae.  Both these amazing releases on Spanish imprint BRIXTON RECORDS.

REPRESS: VOID UNION “Return of The Super Vape” LP vinyl / CD / Tape

Void Union has a simple mission statement: preserve the Jamaican music of the 1960’s, collaborate with Ska’s originators, and actively recruit guest players from the ensembles that have proven equal to the task of reinventing the genre. On this brand new album David Hillyard (The Slackers), Steve Jackson (The Pietasters), Alex Desert {Hepcat), Jr Thomas, The Expanders all guest on what surely will become a modern ay classic! Top-shelf collaborations are nothing new, in the past Derrick Morgan, The Skatalites, Lynval Golding (The Specials), King Django, Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Chris Rhodes (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Spring Heeled Jack),and David Hillyard (The Slackers, Hepcat) all have been featured on Void Union recordings. In November of 2010, Vin Gordon (The Skatalites, Bob Marley and the Wailers) joined the group for a watershed European tour. Thaddeus Merritt (Bass), Rick Smith (Drums), Rich Graiko (Trumpet), Alex Stern (Guitar, Keys), and Anant Pradhan(Tenor Sax), comprise Void Union’s core, but, the band’s philosophy lends itself to a collective atmosphere in which like-minded musicians sit in and assure that no show is the same as the one that preceded it. The audience at a gig is not a mere handful of die-hard Ska enthusiasts; a survey of the crowd yields suits, working stiffs, parents, children, dreadlocks, moptops, and…hipsters? All turn out to bear witness to a versatile ensemble that is as at ease providing the jazz-tinged instrumental foil to a Jamaican legend as it is leading a sing-along at a neighborhood bar. “Return Of The Super Vape available now on CD, limited edition tape, and vinyl limited to 300 copies. Orange vinyl limited to 200.

REPRESS: THE TOASTERS “NEW YORK FEVER” LP (JUMP084LP) back on random color vinyl

THE TOASTERS “NEW YORK FEVER” is finally back on vinyl! Reissue of 1992 third wave Moon Ska Records classic on random color vinyl, housed in a double sided full color poster sleeve with rare photos. Songwriter and lead singer Rob Hingley perfected a smooth, American-inflected vocal style across these eleven tunes, creating a blueprint for the top-ranking outfit’s authentic-yet-unique revival sound. And while New York Fever is founded on the best of the Jamaican and U.K. ska scenes, it also burns with the special flame of the hyperactive New York City outpost of ska’s international cosmos. The band’s playing is stunning on this third long-player, with brilliant bursts of horns punctuating an airtight rhythm section – every track provides the speedy rush that modern ska fans craze. Listening to NY FEVER again brought back memories of how great the US ska scene was before it was taken over by hype…um, and by bandwagon bands trying to be the next Reel Big Fish! This album is full of class, charm, and honest energy – elements that made the “third wave” ska scene great.  Songs like “NEW YORK FEVER”, “HISTORY BOOK”, “SOCIAL SECURITY” and “PLOUGHSHARES INTO GUNS” are simply great songs – THEN and NOW.  Hell, why else would JOE JACKSON get involved and mix the record?!? NEW YORK FEVER in many ways was the transitional record that positioned the band for major chart success in the 90’s. Personally, we grew up in the 80s and got hooked with their “POOL SHARK”, “THRILL ME UP” and “SKABOOM” albums – but when “NEW YORK FEVER” was finally released it was obvious to us that SKA was going to go big with bands like THE TOASTERS….it was just a matter of time. Issued on beautiful heavy weight marble grey vinyl, double sided full color poster sleeve.

Vinyl Tracklisting:  New York Fever – Ploughshares Into Guns – History Book – Too Hip To Be Cool – Night Train – Social Security – Shebeen – Johnny Forsake Her – Too Much Happening – Pool Shark (Reprise) – B27   Download Card has all the above PLUS:  Ploughshares Version – History Book Version – Pablo’s Night Train – Pablo’s Shebeen

RODDY RADIATION “SKABILLY REBEL ANTHOLOGY” LP (RED VINYL IMPORTS) / “BLUES ATTACK” LP (JUMP095LP – OUT OF PRINT)

BLUES ATTACK now OUT OF PRINT.  It’s been many years since we last had RODDY RADIATION’s excellent collection of pre-SPECIALS nuggets, but it’s worth the wait as we now have copies on 180g RED VINYL! An amazing selection that incudes some of our favorite Tearjerkers material as well! Fans of THE SPECIALS and roots rockabilly must get this!  Also we have the LAST COPIES in Hand SCREEN PRINTED SLEEVES of “BLUES ATTACK” ! Far too often when a band claims to combine two dissimilar styles of music into an all powerful “new” hybrid, fans get a wee bit skeptical. After all, in most cases these creative endeavors fail miserably – and quite often it involves ska music. Simply put, this stereotype does not apply to the SKABILLY REBELS. RODDY RADIATION’s band successfully takes the best parts of rockabilly, minus the cheesiness that all too often is associated with the genre, and then puts it to a laid back traditional ska beat. Should we expect anything less? Of course you already know him as the legendary guitarist of The Specials (who also wrote their classics ‘Rat Race’, ‘Concrete Jungle’ & ‘Hey Little Rich Girl’), who also later formed blues influenced acts The Bonediggers and The Tearjerkers. He’s a veteran and true innovator of both the 2-TONE ska movement and the English rockabilly revival scene. Roddy’s  voice is smooth and melodic, yet with pub grit. The fact that his guitar playing is superb goes without saying, but his ability to seamlessly combine both ska and rockabilly without losing the integrity of either genre is downright amazing.  Roddy Radiation has proven again that he is a truly innovative musician and may be in the process of once again reinventing the face of ska music. Guess this album forces rude boy mods and skins to mix with rockers and teddy boys. What can’t we all just get along?
